Primary Weapons Systems Muzzle Compensator

Traditionally, there has been 2 choices, a muzzle brake to reduce felt recoil and muzzle rise or a flash supressor to reduce or eliminate the flash signature. The Primary Weapons Systems FSC556 is a compromise. It has two large ports on the left and right sides along with four prongs on it's front. It is approx 2.1 inches long and .865 inches in diameter. Threads are the standard 1/2 x 28 RH pitch.

Installed, the FSC556 offers recoil reduction and does not produce a low light fireball. It is designed as a muzzle brake, but also offers some flash suppression. The flash is not as large as a standard muzzle brake.

Bushmaster ACR

After taking out the ACR and handling it for a few minutes the quality is obvious. The ACR has an aircraft grade aluminum upper and Magpul’s patented polymer lower. The ACR basic model has polymer hand guards that somewhat resemble the Magpul MOE hand guards and the enhanced model features an aluminum quad rail. Another key difference between the enhanced and basic models is the butt stock, the enhanced version comes with a fully adjustable and side folding stock whereas the basic is fixed and only has an adjustable cheek rest. The basic model’s butt stock length can be adjusted however by purchasing extensions from Magpul. Both models feature a 1913 picatinny rail that extends the whole length of the upper receiver.

The barrel that came with the basic model was a 16.5 inch, 1:9 twist and features Remington’s proprietary dry lube finish. The ability to change out the barrels on the fly is probably one of the ACR’s most noticeable features. Doing so is almost effortless, and switching out a barrel, bolt, and magazine to go from a 5.56 to a 6.8 can be done in less than 3 minutes.

The ACR sports the gas piston system which keeps the receiver cooler and cleaner. There are two conspicuously marked positions for the gas system; U and S, which stand for suppressed and unsuppressed. The gas piston system is also broken down to aid in cleaning, which by the way will need to be done quite regularly since it was the dirtiest part of the gun after firing.

The overall construction of the ACR makes it easy to believe that it is an extremely durable weapon system. There are reports out there of owners putting this gun through some serious tests to include soaking it in mud and water and picking it up and firing it with no problems.

Almost everything on the weapon system is ambidextrous. If anyone has watched Magpul’s Art of the Tactical Carbine, you can see why this feature was heavily emphasized. Firing and reloading from the off hand is noticeably easy. With the bolt catch/release located at fire control position, it makes it easy to perform weapon malfunctions clearings from the primary or weak firing side as well as magazine changes.

Some features that can be reversed to suit a left handed shooter would be the charging handle, and some of the attachment points. The charging handle is placed at the top of the upper receiver towards the front which makes it easy to manipulate it while still keeping your firing hand at fire control. It also works as the bolt forward assist. The charging handle can be easily replaced to suit a left handed shooter by using a bullet tip to depress a latch located within the top picatinny rail above the charging handle and simply flipping the configuration. The single sling attachment point is located at the front of the butt stock and can be reversed to the other side of the weapon by removing a few screws and placing it on the other side. There are also 3 swivel sling attachment points, 1 located on both sides of the hand guards, and 1 located at the rear of the butt stock. The rear swivel sling attachment point can be reversed to the other side of the stock by removing the screw and reversing the configuration.

We would have to say the ACR was pretty much everything anticipated except for the price. This is blamed on Bushmaster, since the price was originally stated as “being affordable,” and probably around the $1,500 mark for the basic model. Well, after the production delays, that price for the basic model jumped up to around $2,400 for the basic, and $3,200 for the enhanced. Its reasonably assumable that the public would be up in arms after promising us an affordable price, then hiking that price up 60%. When compared to the price of a Robinson XCR, or even a SCAR the ACR is substantially more expensive. Regardless if I believe the ACR is expensive; it is however, not unobtainable. And for the quality of construction for durability, and reliability of function for consistent performance the ACR is worth the money

IOR Valdada1x/4x32mm Pit Bull Tactical Rifle Scope

Over the past few years, IOR Valdada has continued to push the envelope of optical design. Their achievements include the first 6- and 7-fold magnification increase scopes, te innovative MP8 reticles and the wide 40mm tubes. For 2009, Valdada unveiled an innovative 1x/4x32mm tactical scope named the Pit Bull at the SHOT Show.

Unlike conventional variable-power designs, it does not zoom from 1x to 4x, and there is no magnification in between. However, while ELCAN's design doesn't resemble a conventional scope with its beefy base and external adjustments, IOR's newest design has a conventional look.

Built on a beefy 35mm main tube, this new optic is quite short at 7.2 inches. One of the features this scope has is the ability to switch quickly from 1x to 4x. When snapped onto 1x, it gives the shooter an incredibly wide (144 feet at 100 yards) field of view.

This new scopes FOV is huge! Kick it to 4x and the FOV is still 38 feet at 100 yards, compared to the S&B's 32 feet at 100 meters. GG&G Agency Looped Rear Sling Attachment

Basic 2 point and single point slings with the H&K style quick clips or snap hooks have become increasingly popular as a method to sling an AR-15. Although GG&G already manufactures several agency style sling attachments for this type of set up, the new Agency Single Loop Right Hand version is specifically manufactured for right hand shooters using collapsible stocks.

The GG&G Agency Rear Sling Adapters were originally developed because a few government agencies established policies indicating that if a tool needed to be used to remove a part of the AR15 or M16 to install a new accessory, the installation could not be done unless the work was performed by the agency's armorer or gunsmith. This caused a major problem for some agencies looking to quickly update their weapons with the latest accessories due to time constraints and the absence of local agency armorers.

Single Point Tactical Slings

The innovatiave singlepoint sling allows decent control of the rifle when transitioning to a side arm. The muzzle must be kept in mind so that it does not hit the ground when transitioning to a kneel, crouch or other tasks low to the ground activities.

The Specter Gear MOUT sling has a one inch loop which connects to a flat mount at the receiver adapter and provides a lot flexibility from the main body loop. It has a release buckle which allows the weapon to be temporarily released while still wearing the sling. Once placed in the up position, the sight cannot be folded down without depressing the spring assisted detent release button located on the left side of the sight base. This totally eliminates the possibility of accidentally lowering the sight.

The A2 BUIS can be used as a stand-alone sight or in conjunction with one of GG&G's FIRE System rails. The A2 BUIS can also be used as a co-witness iron sight with most of the red dot sighting systems. This sight features the standard A2-style double peep aperture and has full windage adjustment. It uses the Colt-style windage knob and windage screw. One click of the windage knob provides approximately 0.48 MOA change when mounted on the M16A2E4 rifle and about 0.65 MOA on the M4 carbine. Initial zero is set by adjusting the weapons fronts sight post. The new GG&G A2 BUIS is the lowest profile flip up iron sight with locking detent. When in the down position, it will clear most optics.

GG&G AR-15 Back Up Iron Sight (BUIS) - $99.99

The GG&G A2 Style BUIS (Back Up Iron Sight) provides the operator with an easy-to-install and easy-to-operate flip up rear sight, and now includes an important new locking detent. No matter where you live, you want to make sure that your home is safe, when you're there and secure when you're not.

When coming home, make certain you are alert to anything suspicious. If you suspect something is wrong, leave the area at once.

Keep the exterior of your house well lit.

Make sure the shrubbery against the house is thinned or pruned periodically to keep it from becoming a hiding place.

Do not depend on the automatic garage door closer to lock your garage. Unless locked, overhead doors can be easily rolled up by an intruder.

If you are a single woman living alone, avoid publishing your first name in the telephone directory or listing it on your mailbox. Use an initial for your first name or consider adding a ficticious name to yours.

When planning a trip, remember to stop delivery of your mail and newspaper.

Buy a few timers or light-sensitive sockets that will light your house at night when you are not there.

When approaching your house from the outside, do not fumble with your keys at the door. Make certain you have the key in your hand so that you can enter quickly.

If you receive suspicious calls, hang up. If the annoyance continues, contact the police and the telephone company.

When having your car serviced or valet parked, lock your glove compartment and give the attendant only your valet key. This prevents someone from making a copy of your full-use automobile key and other keys which may be on your normal keyring.

Tritium Night Nights and FIber Optics

A heck of a lot of Trijicon night sights are sold ever day. These "see in the dark" sights replace the iron sights on your weapon. Night sights have small vials of radioactive tritium inside that glow with no ambient light. The actual Tritium aiming points are sealed with aluminum and a clear sapphire lens that lets the radioactive phosphor lamp be seen in any conditions.

Fiber optics are completely different than tritium night sights. They do not glow without ambient light. They are certainly brighter in the day time than night sights because they channel available light to the end of the fiber where it is installed in the appropriate section of a sight for the most effectiveness. But they are not night sight, needing light to be useful.

Be careful while cleaning your weapon that has either night sights or fiber optic sights installed. Many solvents will cause damage on either of these sighting systems. Night sights also have a life span of ten to twelve years, while fiber optics will last forever unless you break them or melt them with chemicals.

Long Range Shooting Secrets: Scope Tips

Rifle scopes have been around for a long time, however, recent advances in technology have improved performance in all respects. The 3:1 zoom barrier for variable power optics is now about 6:1. Light transmission and recoil resistance has vastly improved. We also enjoy more selections of finishes, power ranges, mounts, and diameters. Long range shooters have placed demands on manufacturers to produce scopes in higher powers, finer and more useful reticles, more accessible and repeatable zero knobs, and better eye relief. It’s not unusual to spend more money on optics than on a rifle.

Scopes became popular for hunting and were designed on the 1 power per 25 yards concept (for deer sized game). That concept remains today. The most popular scope on the market is a 3-9X variable or 75 to 250 yds range. This matches the effective hunting range for most standard high power rifles.

Power is the rating for how much the optics magnifies the image. These ratings are usually overstated. Example: a scope rated for 3-9X may really be 3.4-8.5X.
Eye relief is the distance your eye must be from the lens to get a full view through the scope and is usually stated in a range of inches. Example: a scope with an eye relief of 3-4.2 inches would allow a full view when your eye is between 3 and 4.2 inches from the lens. The higher the power, the narrower the eye relief range will be and the harder it is for the shooter to sight through the scope and pick up a target.

Light transfer (or brilliance) is the ability for a scope to transfer light from the front lens to the eye. The more lenses in the scope or the smaller the lenses, the greater the light loss. Variable power scopes lose more light than a fixed power scope because they have more lenses. Light transfer is very important when shooting in lower light conditions. Clarity and distortion is a product of lens quality. The clearer and more distortion free the view, the better the scope and usually the more expensive it will be. The Objective lens (front lens) size has a lot to do with light transfer, clarity, and distortion. The bigger the objective lens, the better, to a point. Larger lenses require higher mounts to clear the barrel.

Field of view is the width of the view in yards, at 100 yds distance. The wider the better and the easier it will be to spot the target. The more powerful the scope, the narrower the field of view.

Parallax is the least understood and a most important scope parameter. Explanation: Place your rifle in a vise or cleaning jig where it can be aimed down range, hands off. Adjust position until crosshairs are dead on target. Look through the scope and move your head around. Parallax is evident when the crosshairs appear to move on the target when the rifle is stationary and your eye moves. All scopes have some parallax, however it becomes more evident at 9X and above. The more powerful the scope, the more parallax you will experience. This is bad because you must have the same exact hold and view for each shot to keep the rifle on target. Many scopes above 9X have a parallax correction ring on the objective lens that is calibrated in yards/meters. If your target is at 200 yds, make sure the ring is set for 200 yds, otherwise you will still get parallax. This will keep you busy when varmint hunting. Many shooters think their rifle shoots bad groups when the blame is really on scope parallax.

Wiggle is a distractive side affect of scopes. When the shooter wiggles a little, the scope seems to amplify the movement down range. You can even see the effects of your heartbeat. The more powerful the scope, the more you will notice wiggle and the more it distracts you.

Thermal distortion is a phenomenon caused from heat rising from the ground and creating a wavy movement in the scope. Long range shooters sometimes use this for judging wind directions. Mostly, it is an annoyance that distorts the distant target. Thermal distortion is more distracting with higher power scopes.
Reticles are the aiming devise in a scope commonly called cross hairs. Ideally, you want them heavy enough to see in subdued light and thin enough so they won’t blot out the target. A good compromise is the dual reticle where the center lines are thin and the outer lines are heavy. Tactical scopes have mil-dot or other lines calibrated in minutes of angle (MOA). Knowledge of ballistics will enable the shooter to compensate for distance and windage using the calibrated marks for hold over.

Zero knobs are the screw adjustments, one on top, the other on the right side that are used to set the reticle where point of aim is the point of impact. The main difference between a tactical scope and a hunting scope is the reticle and zero knobs. Hunting scopes have a removable cap that allows access to the adjusting screws made for a screwdriver or coin. Target and tactical scopes have exposed knobs that can be adjusted with fingers. Most adjustments have click stops so the shooter can count the clicks when moving the screw. The finer the adjustment, rated in clicks per MOA, the more precise you can adjust zero. Four clicks or more per MOA is recommended. Most zero knobs have a dial that can be set to a zero mark after sight in. This mark becomes the reference point if the knobs are moved to compensate for windage or elevation. Repeatability with zero adjustments is very important. If you move up 8 clicks, left 8 clicks, down 8 clicks and right 8 clicks, the point if impact should be exactly where it was to start with. Many scopes will not pass this test.

The focus adjustment is usually the rear lens group that is threaded on the tube and locked in place with a threaded ring. To focus a scope, loosen the lock ring and back it off several turns. Look down range and rotate the lens group in/out until you find a point where the reticle and target are both in focus. Close your eye for a few seconds and do it again. When you find the focus point, tighten the lock ring. Always focus the scope before shooting for zero. Some scopes have a focus knob located on the side. This is really a parallax adjustment.

Most shooters “over scope” their rifles (too much magnification). They end up with the worst attributes so they buy a more expensive one thinking it will solve their problems. Remember, eye relief, light transfer, clarity, distortion, field of view, parallax, wiggle, and thermal distortion are all made worse by higher magnification and variable power.

The scope is only as good as the mounts. Buy the best rings and base you can get. Mounts can shoot loose, even if loc-tite is used (recommended), especially on those heavy recoil calibers. Weaver style tip offs are OK on a 223 Rem but should be avoided on anything bigger. Use rings that will position the front lens group so a lens cap will fit between the barrel and scope. Higher base and rings will cause more whiplash and will shoot loose easier.
Scopes can cost from $40 to $2000. Let your billfold be your guide. You get what you pay for. Don’t expect Zeiss performance from a Tasco. IOR Valdada give excellent performance for their price. A good selection of scopes are available from Cactus Tactical at very competitive prices.

Revolver - Rods

This precision tool is used for testing revolvers for proper cylinder-to-bore alignment. It is very helpful when troubleshooting timing, accuracy, or barrel-to-cylinder gap spitting problems. This tool is essential when cylinder related parts are replaced to ensure cylinder centering. This inexpensive tool is made of brass so it cannot damage your bore. It has features not found on other range rods costing three times as much. No extra handle to buy or assembly before use. Excellent instructions are included with procedures for double and single action revolvers plus trouble shooting guides for both.

Features

Shaft: All Range Rods have 11 ½” of usable shaft. They will work on any revolver from the shortest snub nose up to 10 ½” barrel length. The shaft diameter is made for “match grade” use and is a consistent diameter (+ or - .0005”) from end to end.

Feeler Tip: The unique tapered feeler tip correlates with a reference post on the handle so you know exactly where cylinder alignment is off from bore line. Other rods will indicate if the cylinder is off, but they can’t tell you if is left, right, top, or bottom. The tapered tip is protected so it will remain accurate.

Long Range Shooting Secrets: Bullet Tips

The twist rate of the barrel determines the best bullet weight for your gun and is the single, most important factor for rifle accuracy . The manufacturer cuts the rifling to a twist rate that will stabilize the bullet designed and tested for that cartridge. The smaller the bore diameter, the more difficult it is to stabilize a bullet. Heavy bullets cannot be driven to the same velocities as lighter bullets in the same barrel, so they are also not spinning as fast leaving the muzzle and may not stabilize down range. Bullet spin is a product of twist rate and velocity. A sure sign of a bullet not spinning fast enough is a target with oval or keyhole hits. Using a light bullet in a fast twist rate barrel may cause the bullet to skip across the rifling and literally file itself, thus larger groups. Excess copper residue in the barrel is a clue. Try to duplicate factory loads. They have been extensively tested for best results. Matching the bullet weight to the twist rate and velocity is essential for accuracy. If you need a heavier bullet than your twist rate will handle, you are probably using the wrong rifle.

Bullet parameters:
Besides weight, there are five measurements that should be considered when
selecting a bullet. Sectional Density: A weight to length ratio
measurement. The longer and heavier the bullet, the higher the sectional
density thus the deeper it will penetrate. This parameter is not important for
target and varmint loads but is very important for game hunting loads.
Ballistic Coefficient (BC): The higher the BC, the more aerodynamic the
bullet, thus it will drop less at long ranges and will be less affected by cross
winds. Due to air density, small diameter bullets such as a .224” typically
have poor BCs. 6mm bullets and larger start getting higher BCs. A BC of .400 is considered very good, .500 and higher is excellent. Balance: All rifle bullets are heavier in the rear than the front and therefore are naturally unstable. The more balanced, the more stable it will be. Bore Surface is the length of the bullet that actually touches the bore. The longer the bore surface, the more it dampens effects from bullet jump shock and the more stable the bullet will be going down the barrel. This parameter is very important for accuracy. Ogive is the point on the nose where the bullet first measures full diameter. This important parameter will dictate bullet seating depth, bullet jump and cartridge overall length. All bullets must be seated at optimum depth for best accuracy. This usually occurs where the ogive is .010” from the rifled bore.

Conclusion: Analyze before loading. Always stay within the bullet weight intended for your twist rate. Try to select a bullet with the longest bore surface, best balanced, shortest ogive to tip measurement, highest ballistic coefficient, and best sectional density, in that order. A good place to start is a boat tail with a blunt nose or hollow point. Most reloading manuals list BC, sectional density, and have pictures of bullets so you can compare important parameters. Don’t skimp on bullets; buy the best quality you can find. Most bullets sold in bulk packs are not uniform weight. Stay with boxes of 100. Use a Bullet Depth Gauge to determine the exact bullet seating depth for each different bullet type. Bullet Depth Gauges are available from Cactus Tactical for all cartridges using .224, 7mm, and .308 diameter bullets. These tools are very easy to use and come with simple instructions. GG&G Looped Agency Sling Adapter - $28.99

In 2005, GG&G originated the Agency Rear Sling Adapter to assist local, state and federal agencies deal with various armorer only policies. Shot Show Wrapup

After attending the Orlando Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show, it takes a while to process everything that is seen.

Orlando is a long way away, but it is almost impossible to do business in the industry without attending. Well, this show was big! The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) statistics showed 656,100 square feet of exhibitor space and 1,870 exhibitors. There was a total attendance of just over 42,000 people.

Attendance is supposedly restricted to dealers, the media and friends of the industry, but it seems like there were an awful lot of non-industry people there this year. It would be near impossible to get any business done if it were open to the general public. The crowds would be unmanageable, they are close to that with the non business people slipping in now.

It's hard to say exactly how much of the show is actually dedicated to law enforcement products and services. There are separate area for LE, hunting, paintball, clothing, shoes, etc., but a lot of companies, had exhibit space in multiple areas. So there is a lot more territory to cover, enough to kep you busy for all four days.

Business is good, there is an incredible variety of items that can be found in any market segment.

The AR-15 rifle is doing very well. Booth after booth displayed every variation possible, and every accessory that could possibly be attached. For sure, there are enough slings, lights, optics and other items to meet any need.

And talk about flashlights! You can find incredibly bright lights in small packages. LED's are getting nicer and many are almost indestructible. Unfortunately, increases in brightness and longevity come with hefty price tags.

Finally, keep an eye on Smith and Wesson. They are back in the game. Just as the original M&P model revolvers were the cream of the crop, 50 years ago. They have hit a home run with thie polymer line of M&P pistols and AR-15 variants. They are definitely gearing up to gain back the market share they lost in the 1990's.

The SHOT Show returns to Las Vegas next year. Hoo-AH.

More on the Magpul Masada

As previously blogged, Magpul introduced their new rifle, the Masada, (Adaptive Combat Weapon System), which created an incredible buzz from those attending the 2007 Shot Show. It appears to have borrowed many of the best features from previous rifles: the AR-180, XM8, SCAR, and the KAC.

the Masada is designed to be a multi-caliber, piston-operated rifle with three possible barrel lengths (11, 14.5, and 18 inches). It will have a polymer forearm, lower, and stock. The upper is polymer with extruded aluminum as an option, with steel rails on the sides There is a full length picatinny rail on top with a built in flip up front sight. The lower uses an AR15 hammer and
trigger group. The barrel with attached gas system is designed to be easily removed and installed.

The Masada is still in the design phase with few rounds having been fired as of the unveiling at the Shot Show. Time will tell to see how the design changes after extensive test shots have been fired.

The price will be around $1200 (low end) to $1500 (fully loaded). I personally can't wait for it to come out to hopefully introduce some price sanity on the recently introduced gas piston guns.

SHOT Show 2007

Christmas in January: SHOT Show 2007 was held last week in Orlando, FL. at the Orange County Convention Center. The Shooting Hunting & Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show is dedicated to products for those who participate in outdoor sportsand military and law enforcement equipment.

The SHOT Show is in its 29th year, with over 1,900 exhibitors and more than 650,000 square feet of exhibit space. This will be my fifth year attending and I know I will have sore feet from walking the miles of exhibit space. Following are some of the interesting items that were displayed. I will follow up with more as the weeks go by.

Magpul has finally unveiled the Masada, it's gas piston AR entry into the tactical rifle market. It blew away all of our expectations. This rifle is the next generation of small arms. It shows so much promise and engineering prowess, it will take a big chunk of the market once it begins shipping. Similar to the SCAR L, but even lighter! This rifle will retail for $1,400 - $1,500. This will rule the gas piston market. The LW's and POF's of the world might as well stop now.

Blackhawk Products Group continues its entry into the holster world, they announced the release of their SERPA holster to fit J-Frame revolvers. The Serpa holsters have been flying off the shelves since their introduction, everyday users rave over how much they like the SERPA holsters for both the duty and off-duty configurations. The carbon-composite molded holsters have an internal trigger guard hook that is released via an external release lever. By securing a normal grip on your weapon, your trigger finger should automatically line up to release the trigger guard lock and also be properly indexed, not on the trigger when you draw the weapon.

Glock displayed a new version of their Model 21, .45ACP pistol. The new version includes a slimmer grip profile, a full Picatinny rail system and an ambidextrous safety. Carrying 13 rounds of .45ACP per magazine, this is a gun that will work for duty or self defense.

IOR Valdada Tactical Rifle Scopes

Industry Optic Romania (IOR) scopes have been around since the 1930's and is one of the world's largest manufacturers of optics and precision glassware, but have really only been available in the USA for around 10 years. They have an excellent reputation, similiar to Zeiss, for quality "Eastern European" rugged scopes with excellent glass. The premier tactical scope is the 2.5-10x42mm Tactical model.

The scope is built extremely rugged, as most eastern European products are. They hold up extremly well to use and abuse. The knobs are well made, the tube is aircraft aluminum and the power select ring is very firm and not loose. The exterior is finished in standard matte. The magnification range is from 2.5-10x with a 42mm objective and a 30mm tube.

The reticle on this scope is the Valdada proprietary MP8 reticle which uses the milradian system. The gradiations have small hash marks for each half mil, large lines for 1 mil marks, and larger hash marks for every 5 mils. The reticle extends to 10 mils below the horizontal and allows hold over out to 800+ meters with a normal 100m zero and a standard 308 load.

The glass on the Valdada tactical scopes is outstanding: extremely clear and bright. The glass is also very sharp and clear from edge to edge, indicating full polishing from edge to edge. IOR-Valdada has had very close ties with German optics manufacturers (Schott Glasswerks) and Zeiss works with IOR from time to time on new products and improvements. The overall look and feel of the scope is utilitarian and ready for field use and these are where it is best used. The rugged construction, visible stadia lines, innovative reticle design and crystal clear glass add up to a well built, moderately priced scope which should give years of use.

CamelBak HAWG's

I recently came into possession of a CamelBak HAWG and had to try it out last weekend. The HAWG holds 100 ounces (or 3.0 Liters) of liquid. Given that the HAWG also has 1100 cubic inches of storage capacity, it will hold plenty of other equipment for your day or overnight trip.

A gallon of water weighs about 7.5 pounds. so the HAWG holds about 6.5 to 7 pounds of water. The system itself, when empty, has a published weight of 2.6 pounds, so that's about 10.5 pounds on your back, when the bladder is full.

Walking along with ten-and-a-half pounds on is nothing. Where you really start to test the comfort of such a system is when you require your body to move in different ways: turning, twisting, pulling, pushing, walking up and down hills, jogging on a beach, etc. The HAWG's shoulder straps are adjustable for fit, as is the waist band. If you don't care to use the waistband, it tucks away into two little pouches (one on either side) to keep it out of your way. There is also an adjustable chest strap and this is amazingly helpful in keeping the shoulder straps from digging into your upper arms. Wearing the HAWG is effortless.

The bite valve on/off switch is easy to use and secures well in either position. Further, the bite-valve cover that came with the HAWG keeps the bite-valve itself covered and clean.

Mine is in desert camo as shown above, The HAWG is available in desert camo, black or woodland camo. The pack has some useful features that should be noted. Tube guides are fastened on the shoulder straps with one on either side. They come in handy for hanging flashlights, hooking other gear, etc. Farther down each shoulder strap is a D-ring for clipping on equipment as needed. The chest strap can be positioned higher up or lower down as is necessary according to your body type. The nylon strap that adjusts your shoulder strap length is captured at the bottom by a piece of hook-and-loop strap - so you don't have loose nylon dangling. There is a sturdy nylon handle at the top of the pack for those times before you put it on / after you've taken it off, but you still have to move it around.

The pack consists of a large storage compartment and a smaller outer pocket, that combined equal that 1100 cubic inches of storage space. The larger cargo compartment has two covered slits at the top - one on eithr side - where a radio antenna could stick out if that's what you're humping. Both cargo compartments have easy-pull zipper tabs and open in a semi-clamshell fashion. Cinch straps - two on either side - help to keep your load tight so it doesn't move around on you, changing your balance at potentially awkward times.

The entire back of the HAWG is covered in MOLLE compatable webbing. If you need to carry more than the cargo space allows, attach some MOLLE pouches and keep on going. The bottom of the pack has an integrated drain-hole (so the only water you're carrying is what you intended) and there are four attachment points, double-stitched nylon webbing - for a sleeping bag, etc. The drinking tube and bite valve both connect / disconnect via CamelBak's trade-marked HydroLink Modular Connection System. This allows you to easily (and with one hand) connect or disconnect the tube and/or valve.

Kydex and Thermoplastic Holsters

Holsters made of molded thermoplastic material-- Kydex is an example-- are very popular currently because of their low cost and extremely functional properties. Leaders in this field are the Fobus Holster from Israel
and the American made Blade Tech holsters.
With modern molding techniques, it is possible to create a holster with a very precise shape and have it retain that shape indefinitely. So a designer can design a couple of retention points on a firearm and make the holster hold the gun much more securely than possible with leather designs. The distinctive thing about the Fobus and Blade Tech holster designs is that the pistol locks in with an audible click when holstered.
This feature makes drawing the gun a great experience. This is hard to describe to someone who's never felt it, but when you draw from a well fitted leather holster the resistance is almost constant until the pistol clears the leather. With the Fobus or Blade Tech it takes just a little snap to release the gun and even though it is still inside the holster it is free to move without friction. This makes it fast. 5 Emergency Tools That Could Save Your Life

1) a good flashlight. There are many on the market, like the Inova LED floodlights and the Night Ops Gladius combat flashlights. Most violent criminal attacks and gun fights take place at night or in low light. Enuf said, get a good light and keep it with you.

2) reliable, spare magazines for your firearm. Carry at least one spare and buy a name brand. Don't scrimp on quality and stay away from the aftermarket stuff. We recommend magazines from Glock, Mec Gar and Springfield Armoury for their XD, amongst others.

3) pepper spray. If you carry a gun, also carry pepper spray. A firearm is a deadly weapon and pepper spray is not. Using pepper spray might defuse the situation without resorting to your fiream. Pepper spray from Sabre Self Defense is the best stuff around.

4) a tactical folding knife. Get a good knife from Benchmade, Smith and Wesson or Emerson and keep it on you.

5) a cell phone. How else are you going to call who you need to call?

Common sense stuff, but do you have all of these with you when you are out and about?

Arizona 2006 Law Updates

On a local note, the Arizona legislature passed a number of laws which will enhance gun owner rights. Following is a synopsis put out by the NRA.

Fairfax, VA-The National Rifle Association (NRA) is pleased to announce a successful 2006 legislative session to preserve the Second Amendment rights of gun owners and hunters in Arizona.

“We are very pleased with the progress and substantive gains we’ve made this year for gun owners in Arizona,” stated Chris Cox, chief lobbyist of NRA. “Through the hard work of the state legislature and our thousands of NRA members all across the state, we’ve passed laws to improve Arizona’s right-to-carry permits, increase reciprocity agreements around the country, allow law-abiding citizens to store their legal firearms in secure locations at government facilities as well as provide protection for innocent victims who defend themselves from criminal attack.”

HB 2074, a right-to-carry improvement bill, eliminates the two-hour course required for renewing permits and puts Arizona among the vast majority of states that do not require a renewal course for permit holders. The law also recognizes valid permits from all the other 47 states that issue permits, similar to out-of-state drivers’ licenses.

HB 2076 requires government entities to comply with a law passed in 2000 mandating they provide readily accessible storage of firearms for citizens who legally carry their firearms to government facilities that prohibit such possession.

SB 1145, the NRA-backed "Castle Doctrine" bill, returned Arizona’s self-defense justification law to its status prior to 1997. Prior to this law, citizens forced to act in self-defense were presumed guilty of committing a violent crime until they proved their own innocence in court. This NRA-backed bill requires the state to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that citizens did not act with justification and enacted the "Castle Doctrine", enhancing a citizens' right to defend themselves from violent attacks.

After strong support from the NRA in the Senate Natural Resources Committee, Jennifer Martin has been appointed by the Governor to fill a seat on the Arizona Game and Fish Commission. Ms. Martin replaces Commissioner Hays Gilstrap, the Commissioner who led the NRA-opposed effort to consider the sale of the world-renowned Ben Avery Shooting Facility north of Phoenix. Commissioner Martin has the best interests of sportsmen in mind and will prove to be an enormous asset on the Commission.

“On behalf of all NRA members and gun owners in the great State of Arizona, I want to thank the state house and state senate for passing pro-gun, pro-freedom legislation for the law-abiding citizens of their state,” concluded Cox

The AR-15

A. Origins. The AR15 Rifle was designed by Eugene Stoner and his team of engineers in the 1960 s for entry into U.S. military trials for a new battle rifle to replace the M-14. Mr. Stoner, working at the time for ArmaLite (a division of the Fairchild Aircraft & Engine Corporation), engineered a revolutionary new rifle utilizing non-traditional rifle materials such as aluminum alloys and plastics. It was initially designed around the .222 Remington cartridge. It was later, at the request of the Army, re-chambered in .223 Remington (5.56×45mm) which propelled a 55-grain bullet out of the AR15 at roughly 3000 ft.-plus per second. With the .223-calibered AR15 sight rifle, for the same weight, a soldier could carry more ammunition than the older .308 Win (7.62×51mm) ammunition for the heavier M-14 rifle.

After lengthy evaluation and revisions, the AR15 rifle was only adopted by the U.S. Air Force for use by its base security personnel. For a variety of political reasons, the Army did not select the rifle. However, as America became involved in the Vietnam War, Secretary of Defense James McNamara cut through the Army Ordnance Department's red tape and selected the AR15 for issuance to troops. The Army gave it the military designation of “M16″.

In the Vietnam War, the rifle initially earned a reputation as being prone to jamming and stoppages. This was, in hindsight, due to three primary factors: 1) insufficient training of the troops on weapons maintenance, 2) poor-to-non-existent distribution of cleaning kits to those same troops in the field, and 3) improperly formulated .223 Remington ammunition which caused heavy fouling (a primary cause of stoppages). Eventually, the situation was recognized and remedied as troops were properly trained to keep their weapons clean and well-lubricated, issued proper cleaning kits, and issued .223 Remington ammunition that was properly formulated to burn cleanly.

B. The AR15 Legacy. Today, the AR15 rifle has become really one the most highly engineered and refined battle rifles of modern armies. It has since earned a reputation for reliability and accuracy. It has been in service in all branches of U.S. Armed Forces now for nearly 30 years. In the process, it has been upgraded from the “M16“, to the “M16-A1″, all the way through the latest “M16-A4″. The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and the U.S. Military Special Operations Command (SOCOM) also currently issues to its troops, the M-4 rifle, which is essentially an M-16 with a 14.5″ barrel, collapsible stock, detachable carrying handle, and other special accessories such as laser/infrared sighting systems, reflex-type optics, grenade launchers, flashlight attachments, etc. For these Special Forces, the M-4 has also been in certain instances reconfigured to fire “full auto”, as opposed to “tri-burst”.

The current generation of military M-16's and civilian AR15 accessories models differ from the originals in many ways, reflecting the improvements and refinements of the rifle over the last 30 years. Current Military Specifications (Mil-Spec) for the rifle s barrel is for a heavy barrel (HBAR), replacing the original lightweight barrel which was prone to overheating and bending. Nearly all current civilian AR15 sights now are built with Mil-Spec HBAR s. The original triangular-shaped, non-perforated handguards have been replaced by rounded, perforated, and heat-shielded handguards for rapid heat dissipation of the barrel. Other changes include; a tri-burst sear on the M-16 replacing the fully automatic sear of the original, adding a brass deflector to keep spent cartridges out of left-handed shooters faces, adjustable front sight and fully adjustable rear sight for windage and elevation, detachable carrying handles, etc.
Today s military contract for the M-16 variants has been awarded to Fabrique Nationale d Armes de Guerres (FN) of Belgium (though the actual rifles are built here in the United States). Colts Manufacturings Co., which lost the lucrative M-16 contract, has retained the smaller contract for the M-4 rifle mentioned above. It has been reported that prior to Colt s obtaining the M-4 contract, Bushmaster Firearms Co. had manufactured a limited run of M-4 s. (Note: According to recent firearms industry news, as of December 1997, Colt is currently in the process of acquiring FN.)

C. Whats in a Name? The name, “AR15“, in general is used by the shooting public in reference to all current rifles (regardless of manufacturer) made to look, function, and swap-parts with the AR15. Non-military contract AR15's are also commonly referred to as “clones”. The actual and original AR15, manufactured by ArmaLite and then Colt (after buying the manufacturing rights from ArmaLite) has been discontinued for political reasons. Each manufacturer of AR15-patterned rifles now has its own moniker for the rifle these days; like Colt's “Match Target”, Bushmaster's “XM15E2″, DPMS's “Panther”, and the hilarious Olympic Arms “PCR” for “Politically Correct Rifle”.
